Hi, I’m Paul.

I’m a professional ferro-cement sculptor living on Gunaikurnai Land in Gippsland, Victoria, near the ancient remnant forests of the Morwell river.

Artist: Meaning maker. Provocateur. Experience creator. Storyteller. Challenging the status quo, and curious in the face of change.

STORYTELLER

As an artist I’m focussed on the knowledge and ideas I can contribute that help people engage with environmental and societal stories and reality.

The works I create are designed to be accessible to a broad public so their stories are grounded in community, rather than cloistered in private spaces that are removed from everyday lives.

My passion for placemaking comes from the knowledge that art within spaces that respond to the needs of the people, gives them more reason to be there. This brings people from diverse backgrounds together and can form the heart and identity of a community. I believe it is a vital part of building the social fabric which enhances our ability to thrive and act with greater compassion to each other, our shared spaces, and the planet.

TECHNICAL INNOVATOR

For me, sculpture making is the culmination of a physical and emotional process.  The materials inspire the forms as much as the stories do.  I’m continually inspired to explore the seemingly limitless potential of the media.

My skills and knowledge of metals, welding, concrete behaviour, engineering, building, and the finer crafts of form and finish, allow me to focus on creative expressions of my ideas, confident that I can realise them in a finished work that will stand the test of time.

EDUCATOR

I have taught sculptors and enthusiasts how to turn their skills to ferro-cement creation. As well as a Fine Arts Degree in sculpture, I have a Diploma of Education, and enjoy passing on my skills. It is exciting for me to see past students with significant works in public spaces, and to experience those places as a member of the community rather than as the artist.
